About the M-19 Flying Squirrel Aircraft:
The M-19 is designed as a rugged, simple STOL aircraft with docile flying manners. The key feature of this aircraft is it’s simple proven style at a remarkable low cost. The low cost is complemented by an easy to build strong construction method (composite).
The build time is about 500 hours for a skilled fitter. However, anyone with a desire to do so can build this airplane. The valuable skills that you acquire will last you a lifetime.
From Oscar Zuniga’s Web page:
The M-19 was never intended to be a trophy winner in any category but one, SATISFACTION. Building and flying this airplane should satisfy the pilot's desire to fly a basic standard airplane, and satisfy the builder and experimenter's desire to... build and experiment!
The M-19 will probably be out of its element if you put a full electrical system, leather interior, glossy paint job, IFR panel, fairings, or other dress-up items in or on it. This airplane will be happiest with you out flying it, not fiddling with it in the hangar or shop, or tacking some extra weight onto it. You want to go dodge some clouds and scout some terrain... so does the Squirrel! You want to fly for an hour or two without having to go through a half-hour preflight... so does the Squirrel! You want to go to a fly-in somewhere over the county line, and not have to save up for a week or two to afford the gas... the Squirrel can do it!
A Note from Justin - Looking for Info!
We're looking for info on all M-19 Flying Squirrel projects out there. As you know I have been involved with the M-19 Flying Squirrel project since Marvin passed. I am working on "closing the circle" when it comes to how many M-19 projects there are out there and where they are around the country. Marvin sold quite a few sets of plans and I have very little info on who they were or where they are spread around the country. Since I took over, I have sold plans in many of the continental U.S. States, Canada, and even in New Zealand and Australia. Ultimately, I want to put together a Master List of as many M-19 builders as possible and use that information to help link builders in the same areas. There are many people interested in building but would like to see a project in the making for themselves. This includes anyone who might be sharing a set of plans to build more than one plane. If those builders will contact me and join the list I'll issue serial numbers for their project. It doesn't' matter if you have built one piece or are nearly ready to fly, let me know how your doing, or even if you've given up. Photos of your projects are encouraged! E-mail, call or write me, I want to meet all of you. Even if I have spoken to you recently, or already know who you are, contact me anyway, it'll be good to hear from you. When you do, tell me if you would like to be on a posted list or not. If enough builders would like to be on the list I'll add a special page to the site. I think this will encourage everyone to keep plugging away on your project or inspire someone else to get started by just knowing other builders are near by. -Justin
